Explain your business in a nutshell

Demand for “green” and “sustainable” products are growing as consumers consider products’ environmental impact as a factor before purchase.  At Sustainable Mauritius our purpose is to create a collaborative platform that inspires a meaningful lifestyle and explore ways in which we can support residents and visitors in making sustainable lifestyle changes and environmentally impactful choices.

When and why did you start your business?

I have fallen in love with Mauritius and its people over the last 5 years. Traditional views about competitiveness, survival, and profitability are being swept away. We set up Sustainable Mauritius to encourage and celebrate all steps towards shaping sustainable lifestyles for the good of the whole island and its people.

How did you come up with the idea?

People often work in silos, creating an idea or ethos and trying to sell it.  It can be a lonely and challenging road. At Sustainable Mauritius we conduct our business in a socially responsible and ethical manner. We respect the law, protect the environment, collaborate with other like minded businesses and benefit the communities where we work. Our vision is of a Mauritius where every person lives within their environmental limits to support future generations.

What kind of additional challenges have you faced?

The COVID pandemic has affected every nation, every business, every person, it has caused delays and hardships, but it has also given rise to new opportunities and ways of thinking.

Do you have a business Mantra?

Yes, “Perfectly Imperfect”.  It makes me smile as it reflects people as a whole.

What do you know now that you wish you’d known at the start of launching the business?

I had so many ideas and I wish I would have known the usefulness of keeping a journal a lot sooner!  When you start a business in the middle of moving continents, you have a lot on your plate, staying focused and organized is key.

Your favorite Sustainable Brand?

The Lakes Free Range Egg Company in Cumbria.

As part of my MBA in Sustainability, I had to research a company in the district where my University is situated.  We found a company that fully embraces the circular economy concept.  It is a family owned business, producing and packing free range and organic free-range eggs.  It is their leading approach to animal welfare, environmental provenance and personal passion for helping breast cancer prevention and research that earned them the Queens Award for Enterprise for Sustainable Development.
